As leaves turn shades of red and brown, thoughts turn to pumpkin-spice lattes and Halloween. For many care home residents though, the fondest autumn memories are of harvest festival.
The traditional October celebration of food grown and gathered from the land is a popular topic of discussion in the care homes managed by Healthcare Management Solutions. To capture the magic of this festival, and to encourage hands-on reminiscence therapy, our annual scarecrow competition was born.
Each October, we encourage our residents and teams to come together to create a scarecrow for their care home with a fish and chip supper prize on offer for the best in class.
Once again, the standard for the 2022 scarecrow competition was incredibly high, making for some tough decisions for our panel of judges.
First Place
This year, the first-place trophy, and the fish and chip supper, have been awarded to the residents and team of Wren Retirement Living’s Westerham Place Care Home. The judges were impressed, if not mildly terrified, by the home’s scary Halloween-themed scarecrow! The attention to detail won the judges’ votes and the Westerham Place family will be enjoying fish and chips to celebrate their win soon.
Second and Third Place
Taking the second-place spot this year are the residents and staff at Qualia Care’s Washington Lodge in Washington. The judges loved their more traditional take on the scarecrow and the use of blue nitrile gloves and a tunic.
The Third place trophy goes to Wallside Grange in Falkirk and their heartwarming scarecrow family. The little family, complete with toddler and skeleton dog captured the hearts of our judges.
A huge well done to all of the homes for their efforts this year, we’re looking forward to the 2023 competition already!
