The growing needs of an ageing population make it imperative that we reconsider our priorities and focus on a sustainable and equitable funding model for social care, that provides a safe, enjoyable and comfortable experience for residents.

The underfunding of social care is an issue that has come into stark relief, particularly highlighted during the Covid-19 pandemic. This crisis exposed the existing vulnerabilities within our system, where social care continued to play second fiddle to the NHS. This disparity not only undermines the effectiveness of health services but also compromises the dignity and quality of life of the most vulnerable members of our community. It is high time that social care is recognised not just as a supplementary service but as a cornerstone of our national health infrastructure.

One of the most pressing issues is the feasibility of centralised funding for social care. While it makes for good politics to announce additional funding, one-off payments provide no long-term certainty for investors, and therefore don’t form the basis for long-term capital investment decisions. We require a long-term strategic solution that addresses the chronic underfunding of social care. This solution must not only be fair but also robust enough to allow care providers to invest in their workforce and infrastructure. Such a strategy would lead to a more resilient social care system, capable of withstanding future challenges and adapting to the evolving needs of our population.
